Tips on how to be a good tutor

As a private tutor, you are giving one-to-one assistance to students, so your attitude and behaviour can influence your students subconsciously. As a result, parents tend to be more cautious when selecting a private tutor for their children.

Tutors need to be intellectually bright and they must know what it feels like not to understand. They must be creative, able to explain a concept by using stories, drawings, analogies, or metaphors. Tuition teachers must be affirming people, humble, and patient.

So how can you qualify yourself? And what are the requirements to becoming a good private tutor? Here are some points that may help you:

1 Establish rapport with the student
A good tutor is able to connect and speak the same language as the students. Being on the same wavelength as the student enables more efficient communication.
2 Be a strong motivator
You have to understand the reason why the students need home tuition in the first place, is because most of them are not faring well in the subjects they sought tuition assistance for.

This is where the private tutor’s role as a motivator comes in.

If you can encourage and motivate them, this will prevent the students from giving up on themselves.

A positive and healthy mindset is crucial and important to a student's performance. Helping students to understand their course work will help push them on.
